Security Lighting

Security lighting is important, but it no longer has to be glaring and ugly. Long gone are the days when a bright floodlight installed near the roof of a house cast a wide circle of unpleasant illumination. You can have safety and security without destroying the attractiveness of your property. Let us show you how.

Security is a factor in any lighting scheme
Light – any light – is the enemy of criminals. This is why you do not have to forego landscape and architectural lighting in order to chase away intruders. Burglars need a place to hide as they break in. They love the shadows. A lit pathway or lighted grouping of plantings in front of a window will discourage bad guys. Any time you eliminate a dark spot around your property, you take away an opportunity for a break-in. Police statistics confirm that good lighting does not “point the way” for burglars, but deters them markedly. So, lower level light, and decorative lighting will still serve you well

  • In fact, bright security lighting can create shadows around the house in which a burglar can hide as a car passes by or a dog barks. Since most people don’t want the glare of a floodlight to come in to their house, windows may be purposely left in darkness, which can be an open invitation for someone to break in.

In addition, a convenient and simple answer to harsh security lighting is to have motion-activated flood lights. This avoids the continuous glare but ensures safety and security. These movement detectors activate wall lights as soon as something crosses a hidden beam. That’s going to scare away any intruder and alert you to the threat.

Don’t forget the obvious
It may seem obvious, but security lighting near doors is often overlooked. Burglars tend to stick to trying to open doors, and a bright porch light – decorative and casting attractive light – will deter someone from trying to get in. A bright porch light is an excellent option. Your patio lighting can be designed so that some of it lights that entrance area. Garage doors can be lit for security. Any of the entrances on the first floor of a home can have security lighting as part of the surrounding landscape scheme. We can design an “at home” theme and use many of the same fixtures for the “away from home” configuration.

There are various kinds of bulbs and voltage options which we will explain to you fully.
  • Fluorescent
  • Halogen
  • Sodium
  • Incandescent
  • Mercury vapor
  • Halide

Some of these light sources cannot be used with flood lights, and we can advise you on the appropriate type.

Security lighting can still be a good neighbor
If your home is very near a neighbor, you may understandably be reluctant to have constant floodlighting. But if they know you have a motion-sensitive system, they will appreciate your investment in the security of your property which also benefits them and the neighborhood. We will design effective lighting that puts the light where you need it, and nowhere else. This is why putting up the brightest light you can find is not the correct approach. It puts light in unnecessary places, which creates the shadows that work in favor of a break-in.
